Friday Snippet #6: this is not butterfly porn, I swear
You are lucky you are not a butterfly.
Here is a little random science fact for you.
So why are you lucky?They are very pretty, I totally agree but when it comes to reproduction... it can be bad.
Butterflies mate back to back and get hooked to one another like you can see on the photo (which is not an uncommon thing in the insect world I believe). Sex can take a while, and I am talking hours. The problem is, if one of the two dies well, let's just say the one left alive is fudged.
There is no way to get rid of the dead, attached butterfly. They are stuck together forever. Which unfortunately for the other one means they can't mate with anyone else, and if female can't lay eggs. I doubt it is very easy to fly around with someone attached to your bottom...
Oh and if you ever see this situation I would advice you not to try and help them by separating them, I have heard that that can lead to ripping the alive one in half.
So let's start this weekend by feeling lucky that we don't mate like butterflies.

Zum Wochenende geht es wissenschaftlich weiter. Und ihr könnt euch freuen, dass ihr kein Schmetterling seid.
Ja, Schmetterlinge können sehr schön sein und sie können fliegen aber die Reproduktion kann ordentlich nach hinten losgehen. Wie ihr auf dem Foto sehen könnt, paaren sie sich mit ihren Hinterteilen aneinander. Und die stehen nicht einfach nur so darum und die Befruchtung passiert einfach. Oh nein, die verhaken sich damit nichts schief geht (ist soweit ich weiß auch gar nicht so unverbreitet im Insektereich) und das kann dann eine Weile dauern (STUNDEN). Das Problem ist wenn einer der beiden währenddessen stirbt...
Man bekommt die Haken nicht alleine auseinander und man ist für immer miteinander verhakt. Der noch lebende Schmetterling hat also bis er/sie selbst stirbt einen toten an sich dran hängen. Was überhaupt nicht spaßig klingt und das Leben sicherlich nicht einfach macht, Fortpflanzung und Eiablage kann man auf jeden Fall knicken.
Und solltet ihr sowas mal irgendwo sehen, denkt nicht ihr tut dem Schmetterling einen Gefallen, ich habe gehört, das funktioniert nicht und wenn man Pech hat, reißt man den noch lebenden in zwei Hälften.
Also beginnen wir dieses Wochenende doch damit, froh darüber zu sein, dass wir uns nicht wie Schmetterlinge fortpflanzen!
